Description

Created in Strata 3D CX, this was done as a personal exercise in lighting.

I've always loved how glass and gems play with light, so this seemed like a natural candidate for this exercise.

I reduced the level of caustics due to the overall composition - with caustics set to realistic levels for these gems the image was just too busy.

An interesting little side note: about a week after posting this image to CGTalk I was contacted by the art editor of 3D World magazine asking for permission to include this in the Exhibition section. "Heart of Gems" was published in the July 2006 issue.

10/18/06 - I've added a link to the hi-res version below.

Well executed and arranged gems. Each gem has been done really well, but the heart one seems to lack the depth required to be held up in that position or it's proped up by a smaller gem behind it. It seems to need additional form, mainly in area at top of heart. Other then that a nicely done piece.

Thanks, loneorbit. I appreciate the feedback. (thumbup) And the heart is actually resting on the surface as it would in a real setting - there's nothing propping it up. I think that illusion may be coming from the POV and the amount of refraction occuring. ...Persoanlly, I don't see it, but then again I know how the scene was constructed - but you bring up a good point. And if you see it that way, than that means that others do too. ...Definitely something to keep in mind. :)

Wow, now that is one BEAUTIFUL render! Congrats! I only wish I had a bigger version to use as my wallpaper!

This is awesome! Actually think I like the high resolution the best...dunno. I don't understand the top comment about the angle of the heart~all the stones are tilted according to their shape from underneath and the heart's back shape is visible by the refracted light. LOL, all you have to do is look at it an extra second if you don't understand. Nice. 8/8

BTW, congrats on having your work published. Kudos to you!

Just a silly question ~ are the stones real or maybe AB Swarovski crystals?

...Sorry - been away for a while.

Albtraum - Thanks for your comments, and yes - the gems are real.

Just for the record the gems have a refractive index based on what they are designed to be: The ruby has an RI of 1.75 and the diamonds have and RI of 2.4.
